The Hospital of Choice Awards Selection Criteria

The Choice Awards offer a competitive advantage to a select group of winners by demonstrating their excellence in service delivery. Each winner receives a certificate of recognition. The period of recognition is for one year; however, winners will remain listed on the website www.choicehospitals.com for 2 years.

The Awards were implemented in 2002 as a vehicle to promote and recognize America's most customer-friendly hospitals. The Choice Awards emphasize Standards of Conduct, Performance Management and Improvement, Systems of Communication, and Educational and Promotional Material provided to consumers. Hospitals may apply in one of four categories depending on the size of the facility. (See application for details) Applicants for the Choice Awards directly compete against all other hospitals that apply in a category. Hospitals compete based on the results of three surveys-- The National Nursing Survey of America's Hospitals; The National Physician Survey on Service Delivery; and a 3-month review of consumer input into the National Consumer Survey on Hospital Service Delivery. AAHCP also rates each facility's website for overall presentation, the information provided, and the efficiency and effectiveness of the site. Finally, a 'secret shopper' phone survey compares telephone answering systems and the customer service skills of hospital staff. AAHCP employs a competitive grading system that compares applicant responses to each section against responses from other applicants in the same category. Each of the sections is scored on a scale of 1 to 100. The applicant deemed to have the highest response in a section would receive a maximum score of 100, followed by the second place score of 95, and third place 90 points. All other rankings shall score 88 points or less. The weight and score for each response is given below. An applicant's total score on all ten sections must be a minimum 882 points and will determine the rankings for the Hospital of Choice Award. The top twenty percent of winners will undergo an extensive review for the following Awards: Best in Service Delivery, Best in Category (I, II, III, IV), and Hospital of the Year.
